PONTIAC SUPER DUTY TRANS-AM
Information About Pontiac's Hot 455 Cubic Inch
Round Port Wedge Muscle Machine

Welcome Fellow Muscle Car Fans!

If you are anything like me, you probably enjoy just about any make and model car from Rat Rod to Muscle Machine. Just the same, you also hold a special place deep in your heart for Pontiacs. As unique and rare as our Ponchos are among the abundance of Bowties and Blue Ovals, the Super Duty powered Trans-Ams of 1973 and 1974 rate as one of the hardest to find. I'm sure we all have seen the SD-455 decal gracing many a hood scoop, but rest assured…the true ones are few and far between. I ordered one brand new in 1974 and was
lucky enough to actually get it.
Mine is One of Fourteen M21 Close Ratio 4 Speed cars known to still exist.
The latest one to turn up was built for Canada where functional hood scoops were permitted.

If there is one thing I have learned about the SD through the years, it's that it shares VERY little with it's fellow 455's. In fact, many of it's components and designs came out of Pontiac's 366 cubic inch NASCAR program. This engine was designed as a full bore racing engine from the ground up, and was then "adjusted" to appease the EPA. It TRULY IS a different animal from the
block and heads to the carb and manifolds.

Also, what it took for the "Bad Boys" of PMD Engineering to bring the SD 455 from the drawing board to reality is muscle car history at it’s best. How they slipped it past GM's top brass and the Feds is a story all it's own that I think no other muscle machine can share. It makes the SD 455 Trans Am truly unique among it’s peers as it was born to pound pavement at a time when "Horsepower" was a dirty word.

What I hope to do with this website is share with you Super Duty Trivia (production numbers, horsepower figures, engine paint formulas..etc.), guide you through the documentation process, walk you through the proper
valve adjustment procedure step by step and take you on
a cruise back to a simpler and exciting time with excerpts from my now available book
